Heathrow Terminal 2 — officially known as The Queen’s Terminal — is one of the busiest and most modern terminals at London Heathrow Airport. If you’re flying with a Star Alliance carrier, meeting someone off an international flight, or working out the quickest way through Terminal 2, this guide covers layout, airlines, arrivals and departures, parking, dining, lounges, and how to get in and out without wasting time.
This guide is written for three types of traveller: passengers flying out of Terminal 2 planning their journey to the airport, those arriving into Terminal 2 who need a smooth route home, and anyone collecting a friend, family member or business associate from Heathrow. As a specialist in Heathrow Airport transfers, Jetset Rides helps travellers reach Terminal 2 reliably, whether that’s a pre-dawn departure, a delayed long-haul arrival, or a straightforward family airport run. Flying from a different terminal? See our Terminal 3, Terminal 4 or Terminal 5 guides instead.
The current Terminal 2 opened on 4 June 2014, replacing the original Europe Building, which had served Heathrow passengers since 1955 and was demolished to make way for a full rebuild. The new terminal was designed by Luis Vidal + Architects and cost around £2.5 billion to build, including the satellite pier and multi-storey car park.
Terminal 2 earned its nickname, The Queen’s Terminal, after Queen Elizabeth II officially opened it on 23 June 2014 — the same monarch who opened the original 1955 building. Architecturally, it’s built around natural light, with a soaring departures hall home to Slipstream, a 78-metre aluminium sculpture by Richard Wilson suspended above passengers’ heads. The terminal is split into two connected buildings: the main terminal (2A) housing check-in, security and the departures lounge, and satellite pier 2B, reached via an underground passenger tunnel.
Terminal 2 was built primarily to serve Star Alliance member airlines, consolidating what used to be scattered across several older Heathrow terminals into a single, purpose-built hub. It now handles well over 20 million passengers a year.
Terminal 2 is Heathrow Airport’s Star Alliance terminal, though a small number of independent carriers also operate from here.

Passport Control: UK and eligible passengers can normally use eGates, while other travellers queue for Border Force passport control. Processing time ranges from under 10 minutes off-peak to 30–45 minutes during busy periods.
Baggage Reclaim: Terminal 2 has multiple reclaim belts, numbered and matched to your flight on the arrivals screens. Allow 20–40 minutes from landing to bags appearing.
Customs: Red, Green and Blue channels are signposted beyond baggage reclaim.
Meeting Area & Pickup Area: The public arrivals hall is directly beyond customs, with seating and clear signage to onward transport.
Total processing time, from wheels-down to walking through the arrivals doors, typically runs 30–60 minutes — exactly the window Jetset Rides builds into every Terminal 2 taxi booking through real-time flight monitoring. Ready to book your pickup? Get an instant quote.
Check-in desks are on the ground floor, with self-service kiosks and bag-drop for most Star Alliance carriers. Online check-in is strongly recommended.
Security screening sits on the same level; queue times are usually under 20 minutes, though allow longer during school holidays and early morning departures.
Fast Track security is available for eligible business and first-class passengers, and can also be purchased separately.
Duty Free & Departure Lounge: beyond security, the hall is dominated by World Duty Free, with gates for pier 2B reached via an internal transit system.
Boarding typically opens 40–45 minutes before departure. Allow a realistic 90 minutes from bag-drop to gate at peak times.
Planning your own airport run? See our complete Heathrow taxi booking guide for exactly how much buffer to build in.
Official, downloadable terminal maps are available directly from Heathrow Airport’s website.
The official pickup point for pre-booked cars is the Short Stay Car Park, reached via a short, signposted covered walkway from the arrivals hall exit, separate from the licensed black cab rank directly outside arrivals. For the full step-by-step route, charges and waiting-time rules, see our dedicated Heathrow Terminal 2 Pick-Up Point guide.
For Meet & Greet bookings with Jetset Rides, your driver monitors your flight in real time, so if you’re delayed or land early, they adjust automatically. Once you’ve cleared customs, your driver is either waiting in the arrivals hall with a name board or a short walk away in the pickup zone, and we’ll text or call to confirm exactly where to find them.
Large luggage, golf clubs, extra suitcases — let us know at booking and we’ll send an appropriately sized vehicle from our fleet, from a saloon up to an MPV or minibus. For executive transfers, business travellers heading straight into a meeting, and families arriving with children and pushchairs, a pre-booked Terminal 2 taxi means no queuing and no surprises.
The advantages of pre-booking are straightforward: a fixed fare agreed before you fly, a driver who already knows your flight number, and a car waiting rather than a queue to join. Corporate travellers can also set up account billing for regular Terminal 2 transfers.
If you’re driving a friend or family member to catch a flight, the Drop Off Zone sits directly outside departures — but it isn’t free. For the full breakdown of charges, free alternatives and timings, see our dedicated Heathrow Terminal 2 Drop Off guide.
This is exactly the friction a pre-booked Jetset Rides drop-off removes — our drivers know the flow and get you to the terminal door without watching the clock.
